Golden Eagles Cruise to 6-1 Win Over West Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Steve Schram and the Southern Miss Women's Tennis (3-0, 0-0 C-USA) team continued its hot start on Thursday afternoon with a 6-1 win over West Alabama (1-1, 0-0 GSC). Backed by a strong effort in doubles, the Golden Eagles opened up an early lead en route to taking five singles matches at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility.

"It was a good team win today and I expected nothing less than a hard-fought match," Schram said. "We changed up doubles because we wanted to see different combinations since it's early in the season. Overall, the team competed very well and that's what we have to do every day if we want to get better."

Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Tanit Lopez quickly set the tone after speeding to a 6-1 win on court three against Hardija Vidnere and Morgan Bishop. Freshman Warisara Lee and junior Katia de la Garza wrapped up the doubles point with an equally dominant performance on court two. The pair put a 6-1 win on the scoreboard. Monique Burton and Sarah Medik trailed on court one but went unfinished.

Yazgan made quick work of Arevalo on court four, winning 6-3, 6-0. Lopez wasn't far behind, winning 6-0, 6-4 on court five. The win for Yazgan was the first of her sophomore campaign while Lopez's win extended her to a team-best three wins. Medik was the only other Golden Eagle to win in straight sets, taking a 6-1, 6-4 victory on court two.

Those three wins secured the match for the Golden Eagles, moving their unbeaten streak to three. Burton was able to erase a second-set defeat to hang on for a three-set win over Bishop. The Australian won 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 on court six. De la Garza was able to knock off her former team after defeating Franco on court one. The former Tiger dominated the first set before falling 3-6 in the second frame. De la Garza never wavered against her former team in the matches final set, winning 6-1. West Alabama was able to steal a win on court three after Yang outlasted Lee in an epic duel. Lee forced a third set but was unable to hang on, falling 10-7 in the final frame.

Next Up
The Golden Eagles will have a lengthy break before returning to the court on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m against Delta State.
