HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â After rain wiped out Wednesday's originally scheduled contest, the Southern Miss Women's Tennis (2-0, 0-0 C-USA) team will finally square off against West Alabama (1-0, 0-0 GSC) on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers and Golden Eagles are expected to start at 2 p.m. at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility.Â
Katia de la Garza's undefeated start is nothing new for the Nuevo Leon, Mexico native. A season ago, the junior won her first six matches and has already won her first two this season. However, Thursday's contest will mean a little more for the former West Alabama star. De la Garza spent her freshman season playing for the Tigers, amassing a 12-6 record at the top singles position. After transferring to Southern Miss for her sophomore campaign, De la Garza swept her former team at the No. 4 singles position last season to stretch her unbeaten mark to four.Â
In total, three other Golden Eagles have jumped to an undefeated start. Monique Burton and Tanit Lopez join de la Garza at the two-win mark, while freshman Sarah Medik earned her first collegiate win against Florida A&M last Friday. On the doubles side, the Golden Eagles own a 5-0 record that has seen Burton and de la Garza account for two of those wins.Â
Scouting West Alabama
The Tigers head to Hattiesburg with a 4-3 win against Jacksonville State under their belts. The Tigers stole the doubles point and followed with wins at the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles positions. West Alabama is coming off of an 18-5 campaign that included a Gulf South Conference Regular Season Championship and a trip to the GSC finals against West Florida. The Tigers earned a Top 25 preseason ranking in the DII polls.Â
