Women's Tennis Defeats Florida A&M in Home Opener

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Women's Tennis team cruised to a 5-2 defeat of Florida A&M in the teams home opener on Friday afternoon. The win marked the seventh consecutive season in which the Golden Eagles won their home opener.
Katia de la Garza and Monique Burton started things off quickly as the duo tossed a win on the scoreboard after a 6-0 shutout at the top spot. Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Tanit Lopez secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court two. Playing through, the freshmen pair of Sarah Medik and Warisara Lee won their first collegiate doubles match via a 6-4 win.
Arina Amaning, who was making her season debut in singles play, had to retire after the first set. The Rattlers were able to tack on a point and then added another point after Lee fell in a three-set thriller. Lee stormed to an early lead but quickly found herself in a third-set tiebreaker after falling 7-6 (3) in the second set. The Thailand native ultimately fell 10-8 in the third set.
De la Garza, Medik, and Burton all recorded wins for Southern Miss en route to the victory. Despite dropping the first set 6-1, de la Garza won the second set 7-5 and then secured her second win of the season with a 6-1 victory in the third set. Medik, a freshman from Austria, earned her first collegiate win after winning in straight sets at the third singles position, 7-6, 6-4. Lopez rounded out the trio with a sweep on court five. The junior won 6-3, 6-0.
