Golden Eagles Shutout Prairie View A&M in Season Opener

NEW ORLEANS, La. - For the fifth time in the last six seasons, the Southern Miss women's tennis (1-0, 0-0 C-USA) team won its season opener. Meeting on a neutral court in New Orleans, La., the Golden Eagles cruised to a 4-0 shutout over Prairie View A&M (0-4, 0-0 SWAC).
De la Garza, Burton, and Lopez secured wins in singles play to give the Golden Eagles their first win of the 2020 season. For the first time in her Southern Miss career, de la Garza was slotted at the No. 1 singles position and rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Castellanos. Burton, who was equally as dominant at the No. 5 position, defeated Lackey by a 6-1, 6-1 score. Lopez was able to secure a win at the No. 6 position after Salma Sanchez Villalobos retired while being down 4-0 in the first set.
Lee, Medik, and Yazgan all went unfinished in the middle of the lineup. Medik held a 6-3, 5-1 lead on court two, while Lee had a 6-1, 5-0 lead on court three. On court four, Yazgan had a one-set advantage over Claudia Andrea Islas Medina before going unfinished in the second set with a 3-3 tie.

"It feels good to start the season off with a win," said head coach Steve Schram. "The team did well despite playing a bit nervous during the first few games in doubles but finished strong as we were able to win the doubles point.
"It's always difficult at the beginning of the season with new players and trying to piece everything together. It's a process and I feel confident that we will show improvements in every match."
Four veterans combined to make quick work of the Panthers in doubles play en route to jumping to a 1-0 lead. Katia de la Garza and Monique Burton carried their 2019 success into the season opener as they won 6-1 against Victoria Fuenmayor Castillo and Mahogani Green at the top doubles position. Arina Amaning and Tanit Lopez earned the other doubles win for Southern Miss as the duo knocked off Jimena Duran Castellanos and Jessica Lackey, 6-3. Freshmen Warisara Lee and Sarah Medik got their first taste of collegiate tennis and responded with success.
