
Women’s Soccer Defeats South Alabama, 1-0 in Home Opener

Thursday night marked the first time that Southern Miss has defeated South Alabama on the pitch since 2008.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's soccer team (2-3-0) shutout South Alabama (3-1-1), 1-0 on Thursday night at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The win marked the first time that Southern Miss has defeated South Alabama in women's soccer since 2008. The Golden Eagles came away with a 2-1 victory over the Jaguars on August 26, 2008 in Mobile, Ala.
Thursday's match was a full 90 minute battle between both teams with minimal scoring opportunities.
The Golden Eagles broke through at the 19:04 mark in the match when redshirt junior forward Hailey Pohevitz found the back of the net on an assist from junior forward Ariel Diaz.
The goal marked the second of the season for Pohevitz and the assist recorded by Diaz marked the first of her Southern Miss career. Diaz transferred to Southern Miss from North Texas in the Spring of 2019.
Pohevitz's goal gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage in the first half and they never looked back.
Southern Miss logged a total of three saves in the contest with all three coming from junior goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich.
Redshirt sophomore Sarah Preston replaced Mindnich in the net to start the second half and she provided the Golden Eagles with a solid 45 minutes of goalkeeping.
Southern Miss finished the match with a 5-3 corner kicks advantage over South Alabama.
Southern Miss will look to continue its success when they host in-state SWAC opponent Mississippi Valley State on Sunday, September 8 at 4:00 p.m. (CT) at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Sunday's match will feature Local Youth Sports Day and the BWW Halftime Challenge. In addition, the first 35 fans through the gates will receive a 2019 autographed team poster.
