Volleyball Heads to LSU for Friday Night Contest

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Just one day removed from a tough four-set loss at Tulane, the Southern Miss (0-11, 0-0 C-USA) women's volleyball team will head back to Louisiana to battle LSU (5-3, 0-0 SEC) on Friday night. The Golden Eagles travel to Baton Rouge in search of their first win of the season 2019 season. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Maravich Center.

The last time out
Wednesday's loss at Tulane was a coming-out party for several of the Southern Miss freshmen. Kess Krutsinger notched a career-high 12 kills and Liana Guillemaud chipped in a career-high eight kills. Krutsinger swung at an impressive .375 percent hitting clip.
Southern Miss took the third set in New Orleans, backed by Summer Johnson's career-best 32 assists. The set win was the first in the month of September for the Golden Eagles. Ashley Chapman, Kaile Tuisamatatele, and Krutsinger each swatted four Tulane attacks. Freshman Hallie Phelan grabbed her first-ever kill for the Golden Eagles and followed with her first block three plays later. Lindsey Legg and Chapman had 13 and 11 digs, respectively.Â

- Hallie Phelan, a Madison, Miss. native, recorded her first kill and block as a Golden Eagle against Tulane.
- Kess Krutsinger's 12 kills were the most by a Southern Miss rookie this season.
- Southern Miss and LSU each have seven players in its freshmen class and have met seven times in the all-time series.
- Junior Piper Matsumoto sports a team-high four double-doubles.Â

The Tigers are returning to action after going 2-1 at the Lumberjack Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz. They produced a four-set win against Fresno St. and a sweep over South Dakota St. Northern Arizona swept the Tigers, giving them their third loss of the season.
LSU also owns wins over Iowa State, Houston, and UT Arlington. Fran Forly leads LSU into Friday's contest as the winningest coach in program history.Â

LSU sports a 5-2 record in the all-time series that started in 1982. The last meeting came in 2017, where Southern Miss swept the Tigers at Reed Green Coliseum. Historically, LSU has won four of the five meetings in Baton Rouge.Â
