NEW ORLEANS, La. – In a four-set (16-25, 18-25, 26-24, 20-25) loss to Tulane (9-3, 0-0 AAC) on Wednesday night, Southern Miss (0-11, 0-0 C-USA) women's volleyball coach Stephanie Radecki has plenty of reason to be pleased with the play of her seven freshmen.
Radecki's Golden Eagles jumped on the home team early, scoring four of the first five points. The Green Wave, though, went on an 11-1 run that put the first set out of reach for Southern Miss. Once again, the Golden Eagles utilized a fast start to open a 5-2 lead on Tulane in the second set. Despite relinquishing the lead three points later, Southern Miss and Tulane found themselves in a heated battle. The former Conference USA foes traded leads five times and were deadlocked eight times during the set.
Tulane would take a two-set lead with a late run, but the Southern Miss freshmen stepped up to the plate to force a fourth set. Kess Krutsinger, Summer Johnson, Liana Guillemaud, and Hallie Phelan combined for nine kills in the matches third set. Fellow freshman Lindsey Legg chipped in with a set-high six digs. Phelan's first Southern Miss kill put the Golden Eagles up by two, then three plays later the Mississippi native grabbed her first block to break a tie.
The Green Wave mounted a comeback in the third set, but back-to-back attack errors gave the Golden Eagles their first set win in the month of September. In the matches final set, Tulane grouped together three runs to put the match out of reach for Southern Miss.
Just one match removed from grabbing a career-high 11 kills, Krutsinger moved that number to 12 with her performance in New Orleans. Her .375 hitting percentage is also a career-best in matches that she recorded at least 15 attack attempts. Johnson, who dished out 32 assists, shattered her previous career-high of 12 that was set against Arkansas State earlier this month. Guillemaud smashed a career-high eight kills while Legg tacked on 13 digs after her career-high 20 against UNC Asheville last Saturday.
Ashley Chapman, Kaile Tuisamatatele, and Krutsinger each swatted four Tulane attacks to give the Golden Eagles 8.5 blocks for the match. Chapman and Tuisamatatele combined for 13 kills and 15 digs to aid the Golden Eagle attack.

Southern Miss will continue its Louisiana road swing at LSU on Friday night. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
