HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's soccer team (5-3-0) defeated Jackson State (0-7-0) by a final score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. The shutout marked the fourth consecutive shutout of the season for the Golden Eagles.
The four consecutive shutouts are the most consecutive shutouts recorded by any team in the history of the Southern Miss women's soccer program since 2003.
Junior midfielder Jenny Caracheo who has proven to be a top producer for the Golden Eagles ever since her breakout performance in the 2018 C-USA Tournament, stepped up once again when her team needed her on Sunday and delivered a goal in the 15th minute of play to give Southern Miss a 1-0 advantage.
Caracheo is now tied with teammates Alice Campos and Hailey Pohevitz as Southern Miss' leading goal scorer for the season. Caracheo, Campos and Pohevitz have all recorded four goals each this season.
Over time, Caracheo's goal would prove to be the only goal of the first half for either team.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead at the start to the second half, Southern Miss was provided with an insurance goal in the 51st minute of play when redshirt senior defender/midfielder Jacky Manteas found the back of the net. The goal marked the first of Manteas' Southern Miss career. The Bielefeld, Germany native transferred to Southern Miss from FIU prior to the 2019 season.
Manteas on scoring the first goal of her Southern Miss career and the Golden Eagles' win
"I am just happy that I was able to contribute to our win today and that we can go into our conference games with a good feeling. Ever since I got here in August, the team has been very welcoming and has made the transition very easy for me, so I am glad that I could pay them back. On Friday, we played a tough game against Auburn and had only one day to recover. I am proud that the team came out strong today and was able to secure our fourth win in a row. It gives us a lot of confidence going into our first conference game on Saturday."
Southern Miss got another tremendous effort from its defense as the group held an aggressive Jackson State offense scoreless to post their fourth shutout of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich, who played a full 90 minutes in the net for the Golden Eagles on Sunday, earned her first clean sheet of the season.
Southern Miss will return to action on Saturday, September 21 when they open Conference USA play against Western Kentucky. Saturday's match will take place at the WKU Soccer Complex in Bowling Green, Ky. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (CT).
