Women’s Soccer Falls to Western Kentucky, 1-0 in Double Overtime

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Southern Miss women's soccer team (5-4-0, 0-1-0 C-USA) fell to Western Kentucky (5-2-1, 1-0-0 C-USA) by a final score of 1-0 on Saturday night at the WKU Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles put up a tough fight, taking the match to double overtime before surrendering the game-winning goal.
The match was a constant back-and-forth battle between both teams' defenses that presented limited scoring opportunities.
With the scoreboard reading 0-0 after a full 90 minutes of play, Southern Miss and Western Kentucky headed into a 10 minute overtime period. At the end of the first overtime period, the Golden Eagles and the Lady Toppers still remained scoreless.
The second period of overtime looked much like the first 100 minutes of the match, with both teams playing lockdown defense. Western Kentucky caught a break at the 103:31 mark in the match when Ambere Barnett netted the game-winning goal.
Junior defender Keely Hoppmeyer led the way for the Golden Eagles defense, making multiple key stops throughout the match.
Junior goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich registered six saves in the contest, helping to hold the Lady Toppers scoreless for 100+ minutes.
Southern Miss will return to action on Thursday, September 26 when they take on North Texas at the North Texas Soccer and Track & Field Stadium in Denton, Texas. The Golden Eagles and the Mean Green will kick-off at 7:00 p.m. (CT).
