Women’s Soccer Edged Out by Southeast Missouri State, 3-2 on Sunday Afternoon

Southern Miss will now return to Hattiesburg and make preparations for its match against Lamar on Thursday, August 29.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southern Miss women's soccer team (0-2) was edged out by Southeast Missouri State (1-0), 3-2 in Sunday afternoon's match at Houck Field.
In a match that was a physical battle between both teams, Southern Miss captured an early 1-0 lead in the 38th minute of play when redshirt junior forward Alice Campos cashed in on a free kick from approximately 20 yards out.
The goal marked the first of Campos' Southern Miss career. Campos is currently in the middle of her first season with the Golden Eagles after transferring from Northwestern Oklahoma State.
Southeast Missouri State bounced back quickly, answering with an equalizing goal in the 44th minute of play on a penalty kick by Morgan McCourt to tie the match 1-1 just before halftime.
The Redhawks took their first lead of the match in the 64th minute of play when Megan Heisserer netted a goal on an assist from Esmie Gonzales.
With time winding down, Southern Miss redshirt junior forward Hailey Pohevitz gave the Golden Eagles new life after cashing in on a penalty kick, tying the match 2-2 in the 74th minute of play. The penalty kick marked the first of Pohevitz's Southern Miss career.
With the match tied, 2-2 in the final minutes of play, Southeast Missouri State capitalized on a scoring opportunity when Gonzales scored the game-winning goal off of an assist by Heisserer.
Junior goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich once again proved to be a bright spot, registering four saves in the match to help keep things close for the Golden Eagles.
