Women’s Soccer Travels to Cape Girardeau for Sunday Afternoon Contest Against Southeast Missouri State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's soccer team (0-1) will travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo. for a 2:00 p.m. (CT) contest against Southeast Missouri State on Sunday, August 25. The match will be played at Houck Field on the campus of Southeast Missouri State.
The last time out
In its last match played, Southern Miss was edged out by Missouri 1-0 in a hard-fought opening night contest in Columbia, Mo. on Thursday night.
Despite the loss, Southern Miss proved that they could hang with top-tier competition, as they managed to hold a talented and physical Missouri team to one goal.
Defense and the goalkeeping of Kendell Mindnich proved to be bright spots for the Golden Eagles once again. The Golden Eagles' defense played with resiliency throughout the match and Mindnich tallied a total of five saves.
In the end, Missouri sophomore forward Julissa Cisneros' goal scored in the second minute of the match, proved to be the difference maker for the Tigers.
Noteworthy moment
Southern Miss will make history yet again when they take the pitch against Southeast Missouri State on Sunday afternoon, marking the first time that the two schools' women's soccer programs have faced each other.
The opponent
Southeast Missouri State is led by longtime head coach Heather Nelson. Nelson has been the head coach of the Redhawks women's soccer program since its inception in 1999.
Over the course of Nelson's 20-year coaching career, Southeast Missouri State has recorded 14 winning seasons and amassed a 218-173-58 record. Five of Nelson's teams have been crowned Ohio Valley Conference regular season champions (2001, 2002, 2007, 2011, and 2014). Nelson's 2006 and 2007 squads captured Ohio Valley Conference tournament championships and also earned berths in the NCAA Tournament.
Sunday's match will mark the first of the 2019 regular season for Southeast Missouri State. The Redhawks had an outstanding preseason, posting a 3-0 record. Southeast Missouri State kicked off its preseason on high note, defeating #20 Memphis, 1-0. In addition, Southeast Missouri State also picked up a 3-0 victory over Missouri State and a 2-1 victory over Southern Illinois.
