
Golden Eagles Split With Spring Hill

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss (9-18, 0-8 CCSA) beach volleyball team returned home on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader against Spring Hill (13-7). The Golden Eagles defended their home sand in the first match, taking the game by a 3-2 score. The Badgers were able to bounce back on an overcast day to take the second match by a 3-2 score.
Match 1
Madison Lawler and Jessica Austin opened with a two-set sweep at the fifth pairing to give the Golden Eagles an early lead. With light mist coming down on Olivia Hepworth and Cyan Blackdeer, the duo was able to outlast Sarah Senft and Emily Greim in a three-set thriller. Blackdeer and Hepworth bounced back after dropping the first set in overtime. Spring Hill cut into the Golden Eagle lead after knocking off Kellie Garraway and Breleigh Favre on court three. Favre and Garraway won the second set, but then fell 15-11 in the final frame. Playing together for the first time this season, Piper Matsumoto and Lindsey Legg secured Southern Miss their ninth win of the season. The duo cruised to a 21-10 first-set win and followed with a 21-18 win in the second set. At the top pairing, Kylie Grandy and Abbey Wilson fell in three sets after making their debut together.
Match 2
After a short break, Lawler and Austin hopped right into a thriller. Emily Sullivan and Leanne Sorrell were able to win the first set, but the Golden Eagle duo won the second set, 27-25. The two pairs traded points until the Badgers had an attack error to lose the set. Lawler and Austin went on to win the second set in convincing fashion. Blackdeer and Hepworth extended the Southern Miss lead after dominating on court four. They won the first set by a 21-10 score and the second set by a 21-12 score.
From there, Spring Hill made a comeback against the Golden Eagles. Garraway and Favre fell in straight sets on court three to give Spring Hill a point. Grandy and Wilson fell on court one to tie the match at two. The pair dropped the final frame by just two points. With things knotted at two, the match would come down to the result on court two. Spring Hill was able to knock off Matsumoto and Legg in three sets after the Golden Eagle pair won the first set by three points. Caroline Herrera and Allison Weimer took the final two sets to secure the win.
The Golden Eagles will be back on April 13 at the Southern Miss Beach Complex. The Golden Eagles will host William Carey in a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
