HATTIESBURG, Miss. - On a windy afternoon in Hattiesburg, the Southern Miss (11-18, 0-8 CCSA) beach volleyball team continued to make history with an impressive showing against William Carey (0-6). The Golden Eagles dominated en route to two shutouts over the crosstown foe, which moved them to 11 wins on the season. Only three teams in Division I Beach Volleyball have recorded more wins in their inaugural season than the Golden Eagles -- Pepperdine (14), Florida State (16), and Central Arkansas (14).
The highlight of the first match came in the first set of Olivia Hepworth and Cyan Blackdeer's match against Raegan Neslony and Kennedy Horn on court four. The Golden Eagle duo jumped to an early lead and never looked back as they won the set by a 21-0 score. The shutout marks the first time a Southern Miss duo allowed zero points in a set. They went on to win the second set in convincing fashion as well. With Southern Miss honoring Jessica Austin on Senior Day, the Michigan native sure made her last time at the Southern Miss Beach Complex a good one. Madison Lawler and Austin cruised to a 21-5, 21-8 win on court five.Â
Lindsey Smith and Chloe Klusman rounded out the first flight with a sweep on court six. The pair defeated Natalie DuVall of William Carey and Southern Miss' Kinsley Hanback. In the second flight, Breleigh Favre and Kellie Garraway won a close first set before allowing only seven points in a second-set win. Piper Matsumoto and Lindsey Legg followed with a dominating performance on court five after winning 21-13, 21-15. Kylie Grandy and Abbey Wilson finished the Crusaders with a two-set sweep at the top pairing over Gillian Tripp and Raquel Munoz. The Golden Eagle pair won both sets by a 21-9 score.Â
The Golden Eagles continued to flex their muscles into the second match of the afternoon. Smith and Hanback swept at the sixth pairing, which counted as an exhibition match. Lawler and Austin remained hot as they cruised to a 21-14, 21-7 win on court five. Up 1-0, Hepworth and Blackdeer extended the lead with a sweep on court four. Southern Miss secured its 11th win after Grandy and Wilson finished off Tripp and Munoz with a 21-4 second-set win. Garraway and Favre piled onto to the lead after winning in straight sets once again. Matsumoto and Legg rounded out the successful day with a 21-13, 21-12 win.Â
The Golden Eagles will head to Georgia next weekend for the CCSA Tournament. They will kickoff pool play on Friday morning.Â
