HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss beach volleyball team will conclude its regular season on Saturday against crosstown rival William Carey. The Golden Eagles (8-19, 0-8 CCSA) and Crusaders (0-4) will clash in a doubleheader at the Southern Miss Beach Complex starting at 1:30 p.m.
Southern Miss heads into the weekend one week removed from recording the first-ever home win in Southern Miss history, beating Spring Hill by a 3-2 score. The Golden Eagles saw wins from Madison Lawler/Jessica Austin, Olivia Hepworth/Cyan Blackdeer, and Piper Matsumoto/Lindsey Legg during the morning half of the doubleheader. However, the Badgers responded with a 3-2 win of their own in the afternoon session. Blackdeer/Hepworth and Austin/Lawler were the lone pairs to snag wins in the second match.Â
The Golden Eagles became just the sixth program to win at least nine matches in their inaugural season in Division I Beach Volleyball. The only other schools with more wins are North Florida (9), UNC Wilmington (10), Pepperdine (14), Florida State (16), and Central Arkansas (14). Pepperdine went undefeated en route to winning the National Championship in its inaugural season.Â
William Carey, who is also debuting its beach volleyball program this season, is currently winless with four losses. The Crusaders fell 4-1 to Principia College in their first-ever match. They also fell to Spring Hill and Huntingdon, both of whom the Golden Eagles have beaten this season. William Carey dropped a 4-1 decision to Huntingdon last Friday, which marks the last time they played.Â
Southern Miss will honor Jessica Austin prior to the match for Senior Day. Austin transferred from North Alabama after becoming an All-American under Stephanie Radecki on the indoor team.Â
The Southern Miss Beach Complex is located near the Payne Center. Admission is free. Â
