Women's Tennis Opens C-USA Championships Against Eighth-Seeded UTSA

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team was handed a nine seed prior to the 2019 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships in Houston, Texas. The Golden Eagles will open against eighth-seeded UTSA on Thursday at 9 a.m. The four-day, fourteen-team bracket will conclude on Sunday with a C-USA Champion being crowned.Â
On March 14, the two teams tangled in San Antonio during Southern Miss' spring break trip. Rikeetha Pereira and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan were the lone Golden Eagles to record a win during their 5-2 loss. Pereira cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win at second singles over UTSA's Laura Cabrera. Yazgan, a Turkey native, dropped her first set against Charleen Tiwari in a tiebreaker but bounced back to win the second set. Tiwari retired in the third set, which gifted Yazgan a win.Â
Sophomore Katia de la Garza takes her team-best 10-2 record into a rematch against Mariah Plauth, who defeated the Mexico native in straight sets last month. Similarly, senior Tjasa Jerse is looking for revenge after falling 6-1, 6-1 to Kylee Kato. Jerse's 67 wins currently rank fourth all-time in career wins at Southern Miss.Â
Thursday's contest will be the first for the Golden Eagles since a 4-3 loss to UAB on April 6. From there, Southern Miss had matches against William Carey and LA Tech canceled due to inclement weather.Â
Southern Miss and UTSA faced each other in the 2017 C-USA Tournament, which saw the Roadrunners come out victorious, 4-2.Â
