Golden Eagles Conclude Season at C-USA Championships

HOUSTON, Texas - The Southern Miss women's tennis team concluded its 2019 campaign with a 4-2 loss from the hands of UTSA at the Conference USA Championships.
The Golden Eagles flew to a quick start after Monique Burton and Katia de la Garza cruised to a 6-1 win at the third doubles pairing. The Roadrunners stayed alive after defeating Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse, 6-4, at the top pairing. With a winner-take-all match at the second pairing, Rikeetha Pereira and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan answered the bell. The duo battled to a 7-5 win, which secured the doubles point for Southern Miss.
In singles play, UTSA found three consecutive wins to go up 3-1 over the Golden Eagles right off the bat. Yazgan, however, kept the game alive with a thriller at the fifth singles position. The Turkey native found herself in a quick hole after dropping the first set. She then dominated in a 6-1 second-set win, which was followed by a 6-2 win in the third set. The Roadrunners put the match out of reach shortly after Yazgan's win when Pereira fell in three sets on court two. The senior won the first set but dropped the final two sets. Jerse went unfinished on court three and concluded her Southern Miss career with 67 wins -- good for fourth all-time in program history.
In Steve Schram's inaugural season at the helm of the Golden Eagles, he finished with a 12-5 record. UTSA will move on to face top-seeded Old Dominion in the quarterfinal match.
