GULF SHORES, Ala. - In the final day of its weekend trip to Gulf Shores, Ala., Southern Miss (2-11, 0-4 CCSA) concluded The March to May with back-to-back losses to Spring Hill and No. 18 Georgia State.
Match 1
The Badgers, in their third meeting against the Golden Eagles this season, found a 4-1 win Saturday morning. Jessica Austin and Madison Lawler went the distance at the No. 5 pairing, but fell in the third set, 15-12.
Spring Hill swept the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 pairings. The two teams still have two more meetings this season, including a home match on April 6 at the Southern Miss Beach Courts.
Match 2
Georgia State, who's ranked No. 18 in the AVCA Coaches Poll, got the best of the Golden Eagles in a 3-2 win. Austin and Lawler picked up an early lead for the Golden Eagles at the No. 5 pairing, winning in straight sets, 21-16, 23-21. Olivia Hepworth and Breleigh Favre followed with their second win of the weekend at the No. 4 pairing. The duo knocked off Ashley McGinn and Bekah Brodbeck after dropping the first set.
However, the Panthers answered with two-set wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 pairings. Matsumoto and Garraway nearly found their second win of the day, but fell 15-12 in the third set at the No. 3 pairing. Southern Miss and Georgia State are schedule to meet at least one more time this season at the Tiger Beach Challenge in Baton Rouge, La.
The Golden Eagles are back in the sand when they head to Tennessee-Martin and Austin Peay for midweek matches on March 13 and March 14, respectively. They will continue the road swing with The Governor's Challenge at Austin Peay next weekend.
