Golden Eagles Fall on Day One in Gulf Shores

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Southern Miss beach volleyball team dropped its opening games of The March to May in Gulf Shores, Ala. The Golden Eagles fell in a 4-1 decision to UAB in the first match of the day at the Gulf Shores Main Beach. Tulane, who the Golden Eagles were playing for the third time, swept the match by a 5-0 score.

Match 1

UAB, who is hosting The March to May, jumped ahead early with a win at the No. 5 pairing over Lindsey Smith and Jessica Austin. The Golden Eagles cut into the deficit with a win at the No. 4 pairing. Olivia Hepworth and Breleigh Favre added their second win in three games after sweeping Emma Andraka and Jenna Gathright, 23-21, 23-21. That win moved the pair to 4-6 on the season. From there, UAB went on to sweep matches at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 pairings.

The win bumped UAB to 5-5 after the Blazers dropped their morning match to Tulane.

Match 2

Friday's contest marked the third meeting in four days for the two teams after the Greene Wave swept a doubleheader at Southern Miss on Tuesday afternoon. Madison Lawler moved to the fifth pairing with Jessica Austin, but the duo was unable to muster any momentum. Favre and Hepworth, who split with Tulane at the No. 4 spot on Tuesday, battled to three sets, but eventually fell 15-8.

Abbey Wilson and Cyan Blackdeer went the distance at the No. 2 pairing, but dropped the third set to Rio Frohoff and Lauren Orlich, 16-14. Kylie Grandy and Lindsey Legg fell in straight sets at the No. 1 pairing, but battled to an overtime loss in the second set. The Golden Eagles still have at least one more meeting left against the Green Wave this season.

Southern Miss is slated to play Georgia State and Spring Hill on Saturday. Game times will be announced shortly for those games.
