HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Three days after making history at The Mardi Gras Challenge hosted by the Golden Eagles (2-7, 0-2 CCSA), Southern Miss travels to The March to May in Gulf Shores, Ala. It will open with another CCSA contest against UAB at 11 a.m. on Friday. The Golden Eagles turnaround quickly for a 4 p.m. match against Tulane, another CCSA foe.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up on Saturday with matches against Georgia State and Spring Hill. All four matches will be played at the Gulf Shores Main Public Beach (Gulf Place).
Last time out
The Golden Eagles made history on Tuesday when they hosted Tulane for the first-ever Division I Beach Volleyball match on the campus of a Mississippi university . The Green Wave got the best of the Golden Eagles in the first game, 4-1. Breleigh Favre and Olivia Hepworth grabbed Southern Miss a point at the No. 4 pairing after sweeping Tulane. In the 3:30 p.m. contest, the Golden Eagles fell by a 4-1 score. Abbey Wilson and Cyan Blackdeer moved their record to 6-3 with a win at the No. 2 pairing.
Scouting UAB
The Blazers head to Gulf Shores sporting a 4-4 record, but are in the midst of a four-game skid. However, those four losses have come against teams ranked inside the Top 20. UAB is led by Kenley Adams and SalliAnne Napolitano at the No. 1 pairing, who have a 4-4 record. The No. 2 and No. 3 pairings for the Blazers also have a 4-4 record. Adams, as recently as last week, was rated as the No. 15 player in country, while Napolitano was ranked No. 16.
Friday at 12 p.m.
Scouting Tulane
The Green Wave, who are riding a three-game win streak, start The March to May with a 5-6 record. Against Southern Mississippi last Tuesday, the Green Wave dropped just two of their ten matches. Kaylie McHugh and Eva Torruella pace Tulane with an 8-3 record at the No. 1 pairing. The Green Wave's No. 3 pair is the only other duo currently sitting over .500 on the season. Tulane's CCSA record is at 2-4 after adding those two wins against the Golden Eagles.
Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Scouting Georgia State
The Panthers join UAB as the lone team the Golden Eagles have yet to see this season. Georgia Southern has a 4-4 record after splitting a weekend tournament in Fort Worth, Texas. It dropped matches to TCU and Grand Canyon, while wins came against Tulane and Missouri State. Eden Hawes and Georgia Johnson lead the Panthers with a 5-3 record at the No. 1 pairing. In Fort Worth, the pair went 3-1 with a three-set loss to McHugh and Torruella of Tulane.
Saturday at 7:30 a.m.
Scouting Spring Hill
Saturday's meeting between the Badgers and Golden Eagles marks the third meeting of the season between the two. Spring Hill got the best of Southern Miss both times, but perhaps the third time is the charm for the black and gold. The first meeting resulted in a 4-1 loss, while the second meeting ended in a 3-2 loss. The Golden Eagles have found wins at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 pairings over the course of those first two meetings. Spring Hill will open the tournament with a 7-0 record.
