Women's Tennis Falls at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. - A day after putting up a dominant showing against Prairie View A&M, the Southern Miss (12-3, 0-1 CUSA) women's tennis team fell at Tulane (7-12, 0-0 AAC), 4-0. The Green Wave, who extended their winning streak to two games, picked up an important doubles point early in the match.
Katia de la Garza/Monique Burton jumped out to an early lead en route to a 6-1 win at the third doubles position. Tulane responded with a 6-2 win at the number two pairing against Rikeetha Pereira/Ebru Zeynep Yazgan. Arina Amaning/Tjasa Jerse, who faced the No. 33 doubles pair in the nation, went the distance against Ivone Alvaro/Elena Muller. The Golden Eagle duo lost the tiebreak by a 7-4 score, which gave Tulane the doubles point.
"All the matches were close and a few were in the third set when the match was stopped," said coach Steve Schram. "Everyone competed hard and it was very good to be pushed against a good team."
Alvaro jumped ahead early against Jerse en route to a 6-0, 6-1 win on court three. Pereira followed with a heartbreaker on court two. The senior dropped both sets by a 6-4 score. The Green Wave secured the win with a victory by Muller on court one. Amaning dropped the first set via a tiebreaker, then dropped the second set by a 6-2 score.
De la Garza went unfinished on court four while leading in the third set. Yazgan and Burton also went unfinished.
The Golden Eagles will host Southern on Thursday at 2 p.m. The match will mark senior day for Pereira and Jerse.
