SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southern Miss baseball team completes a four-game road swing this weekend as they return to Conference USA play in a three-game series against UTSA at Roadrunner Field.
Game times include a 6 p.m., series opener on Friday, followed by a single 2 p.m., contest on Saturday and a 1 p.m., series-ending game on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (16-6, 6-0 C-USA) opened the week with a 5-0 shutout victory versus Nicholls State at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La., winning their eighth-straight game in a row and 12 of their last 13 contests. The current Southern Miss win streak ties for the nation's longest with UC Irvine.
The blanking of Nicholls State was the second in a row for Golden Eagle pitching and the first time the program recorded back-to-back shutouts since the 2017 season against Xavier in a doubleheader on March 11, 2017.
The team's earned run average was lowered to 2.77 this season, which ranks No. 12 in the country.
This weekend, though, features a hitter-friendly park that allowed the Golden Eagles to hit 10 home runs in a three-game sweep of the Roadrunners (11-14, 3-3) here during the 2017 campaign.
Southern Miss will utilize a different rotation again this weekend as they will look to continue to keep their strong start on the mound in 2019.
Junior right-hander Walker Powell (2-0, 2.12 ERA) will again start in the opener, and will be followed by senior left-hander Adam Jackson (1-0, 1.69 ERA) and freshman right-hander Gabe Shepard (0-0, 3.60 ERA) to complete the series.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles continue to be led by senior first baseman Hunter Slater, who holds a .400 batting average this season with four home runs and 24 RBI. Junior Bryant Bowen ranks second at .378 with two homers and 14 RBI, while sophomore Gabe Montenegro is at .356 with a homer and seven RBI to go along with a team-high 27 runs scored.
All three games can be heard on an affiliate on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College as well through the Southern Miss Gameday app. A paid webstream is also available through C-USA.tv for both Friday and Sunday's games.
