UTSA Defeats Southern Miss 12-2 in Series Opener Friday Night

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – UTSA collected three home runs and Karan Patel threw 7 2/3 innings of two-hit ball to lead the Roadrunners to a 12-2 Conference USA victory over Southern Miss at Roadrunner Field Friday evening.
The Golden Eagles (16-7, 6-1 C-USA) had an eight-game winning streak as UTSA scored in five different innings.
Ryan Stacy collected a solo homer in the first, before the Roadrunners took the lead for good on a Dylan Rock RBI single in the third.
UTSA broke open the game with six runs in the fifth as Hunter Grimes collected a solo shot to open the frame and Chase Keng capped the inning with a grand slam to lead the Roadrunners in their 15-hit attack. It tied for the most hits the Golden Eagles have surrendered in a contest this season.
Patel (2-3) retired 10 hitters in a row at one point as he posted nine strikeouts and only two walks to earn the victory.
Bryant Bowen tied the score at 1-1 with a solo homer off of Patel, his third of the year, in the third inning. It was the third career homer for Bowen at Roadrunner Field.
The Golden Eagles managed just one more run, coming in the ninth, on an RBI single from Matt Wallner.
Golden Eagle starter Walker Powell (2-1) allowed four runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings to suffer the loss as he also fanned two.
The two teams continue the series with a 2 p.m., contest on Saturday.
