Golden Eagles Beat Gold Nuggets in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. - With a 4-1 win over Xavier (La.), the Golden Eagles (10-2, 0-1 CUSA) knocked off the No. 3 team in the ITA NAIA Poll. Southern Miss and Xavier (12-4) only played singles, as the Golden Eagles reached the four-point threshold without needing doubles play.
Senior Tjasa Jerse got things rolling with her sixth win of the season, besting Farah Baklouti in straight sets. Arina Amaning extended the Golden Eagle lead to two after defeating Charlene Goreau, 6-2, 6-3. Goreau is the sixth-ranked singles player in the NAIA rankings.
Katia de la Garza reached the nine-win mark after beating Angelica De Vincenzi at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2. The Gold Nuggets got their first point of the day with a win at the No. 2 singles position. Rikeetha Periera fell in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Ebru Zeynep Yazgan secured the Southern Miss win with a convincing victory at No. 5 singles. Yazgan walked away with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Monique Burton, a fellow freshman, went unfinished at the sixth singles position after leading 6-2, 5-2.
The win was the 10th of the season for the Golden Eagles and their third in a row. Southern Miss will be back in action on Sunday at Jackson State. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
