
Golden Eagles Hit the Road for Two Matches

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After cruising to a 7-0 shutout at home over Bradley on Tuesday afternoon, the Southern Miss women's team hits the road for a pair of weekend matches. Xavier (La.) awaits the Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans, La., while Jackson State will host them on Sunday afternoon in Jackson, Miss.Â

The Golden Eagles posted a 7-0 shutout against Bradley for their ninth win of the season. Southern Miss' 9-2 record is tied for the best start in program history. Senior Rikeetha Pereira extended her winning streak to five after defeating Bozana Lojpur, 6-2, 6-2. Pereira and freshman Ebru Zeynep Yazgan extended their doubles winning streak to four games and jumped to a team-best 9-1 record at the No. 2 pairing. Sophomore Katia de la Garza tied Pereira for a team-best 7-1 singles record with a three-set thriller on court four. Monique Burton, a freshman from Australia, recorded the first win of her Southern Miss career after besting Nina Marjanovic in straight sets on court six. Burton and de la Garza also picked up a win at No. 3 doubles. Arina Amaning, Tjasa Jerse, and Yazgan all recorded two-set sweeps of their opponents.Â

Xavier, who is ranked No. 3 in the NAIA Women's Tennis Coaches Poll, will host the Golden Eagles on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Gold Nuggets boast three players ranked inside the ITA Top 25 and one doubles pair ranked inside the Top 25. Xavier has an overall record of 11-3 and have won its last nine matches. Mariia Borodii leads the Gold Nuggets with a 6-1 record and is ranked No. 2 in the ITA Singles Poll. Charlene Goreau sits with a 9-1 record at No. 2 singles and is ranked No. 6 in the ITA Singles Poll. Farah Baklouti and Boridii are the No. 3 doubles team in the ITA Doubles Poll after jumping to a 9-0 start.Â
Scouting Jackson StateÂ
The Tigers host the Golden Eagles after falling victim to a 4-0 defeat in Hattiesburg on Jan. 26. Yazgan, de la Garza, and Pereira all recorded singles wins to go along with sweep at doubles. Jackson State heads into Sunday's contest with a 6-13 record and a 3-2 record in SWAC play. Last Sunday, Southern knocked off the Tigers by a 4-2 score.Â
