Golden Eagles beat Spring Hill, Fall to UNF and LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. - On the final day of The Tiger Beach Challenge, the Golden Eagles (8-17, 0-8 CCSA) ended their stay in Louisiana with a win and two losses. In the morning bout, Southern Miss escaped with a 3-2 win over Spring Hill. North Florida swept the afternoon match by a 5-0 score, while the Golden Eagles had an impressive showing in a 4-1 loss to No. 4 LSU in the nightcap.Â
Match 1
Facing each other for the fourth time this season, the Golden Eagles finally got the best of the Badgers, 3-2. Jessica Austin/Madison Lawler got things rolling with a convincing 21-17, 21-15 win at the fifth pairing. However, Spring Hill tied the match at one with a three-set win over Cyan Blackdeer/Olivia Hepworth. Abbey Wilson/Piper Matsumoto won their first match of the weekend, besting Taylor Hurst/Cassadi Sterret by a 23-21, 21-19 score at the second pairing.Â
The Golden Eagles guaranteed themselves their eighth win of the season after Kyle Grandy/Lindsey Legg squeaked out a three-set win at the top pairing. The duo won the first set in overtime, then dropped the second set by seven points. They bounced back to win the third set by six points. Lindsey Smith/Chloe Klusman won their exhibition match in three sets over Leanne Sorrel/Ryann Horkavy.Â
Match 2Â
Fresh off a win, the Golden Eagles matched up against North Florida for the first time this season. The Ospreys swept the Golden Eagles by a 5-0 score. Klusman/Smith won another exhibition match by sweeping Breana Edwards/Chantel McMillan by a 25-23, 21-11 score. North Florida swept at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 pairings. Blackdeer/Hepworth were able to win the first set at the No. 4 pairing, but fell in the final two.Â
Match 3
Against No. 4 LSU, the Golden Eagles dropped a 4-1 contest. Legg/Grandy fell in straight sets to Claire Coppola/Kristen Nuss, who were the CCSA Pair of the Week in the opening weekend of the season. The Tigers were able to win in straight sets at the fifth pairing, but Hepworth/Blackdeer found their first win of the day at the fourth pairing. The two narrowly won the first set before dropping the second set, but then won the third set by two points. LSU cruised to two-set wins at the second and third pairings to secure the victory.Â
The Golden Eagles will be back in action against Spring Hill on April 6. First serve at the Southern Miss Beach Courts is slated for 11 a.m.
