Golden Eagles Split on Opening Day of The Governors Challenge

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -Â Just a day after splitting with Austin Peay, the Golden Eagles (6-13, 0-5 CCSA) found themselves with a similar result on day one of The Governors Challenge in Clarksville, Tenn. They opened with a 4-1 win over Missouri Baptist (1-6), but fell to Central Arkansas (2-0) by a 4-1 score in the afternoon match.Â
Match 1
The Golden Eagles got out to a hot start once again, winning at the No. 4 and No. 5 pairing. Jessica Austin and Madison Lawler delivered a 21-18, 21-9 win at the fifth pairing, while Olivia Hepworth and Breleigh Favre added a 21-11, 21-18 win. That win moved Hepworth and Favre to 10-8 and Austin and Lawler moved to 6-5.Â
Missouri Baptist was able to tack on a point with a three-set win over Cyan Blackdeer and Kellie Garraway. Abbey Wilson and Piper Matsumoto added their second win of the season after a two-set sweep at the No. 2 pairing with a 21-11, 21-15 score. At the No. 1 pairing, Kylie Grandy and Lindsey Legg closed things out with a 21-19, 21-12 win. That win marked the eighth of the season for the top pair. Chloe Klusman and Lindsey Smith added a win in straight sets in the exhibition match.Â
Match 2
Blackdeer and Garraway found their third win of the season at the No. 3 pairing, but that was the lone point the Golden Eagles would receive. The two bested Jessica Martinez and Kellen Dunn by a 28-26, 22-20 score. The Bears added a three-set win against Favre and Hepworth after the Golden Eagle pair won the second set, but dropped the third set, 15-10. Grandy and Legg also lost in three sets after easily winning the second set. The top pair ended up losing the final set by a 15-12 score.Â
The loss dropped the Golden Eagles to 6-13 in their inaugural season. Southern Miss will close out The Governors Challenge on Saturday morning against Tusculum. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
