Golden Eagles Cruise Past Tusculum at The Governors Challenge

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -Â On the final day of The Governors Challenge at Austin Peay, Southern Miss made it a good one. The Golden Eagles (7-13, 0-5 CCSA) cruised past Tusculum (3-3) en route to a 5-0Â win. All six pairs prevented the Pioneers from reaching 20 points in any set today.Â
Jessica Austin and Madison Lawler opened at the No. 5 pairing with a 21-11, 21-16 win, which pushed their record to 7-6 on the season. It also marked their sixth win in their last 10 matches. At the No. 5 pairing, Breleigh Favre and Olivia Hepworth followed with a 21-12, 21-8 beating of Jordan Zaleski and Lydia Collins. The two now sit two games over .500 with an 11-9 record.Â
Cyan Blackdeer and Kellie Garraway delivered the match of the day after allowing just a total of 15 points over two sets. The two won 21-6 in the first set at the No. 3 pairing, then followed with a 21-9 second-set win. At the No. 2 pairing, Abbey Wilson and Piper Matsumoto delivered a 21-18, 21-19 win over Melissa Mazar and Lana Vujosevic. Kylie Grandy and Lindsey Legg wrapped things up with a 21-15, 21-11 win over Tusculum's top pair. That gave the pair their ninth win of the season. Lindsey Smith and Kinsley Hanback dded a 21-5, 21-8 win in the exhibition match. That pair sits at 3-1 since joining forces.Â
The Golden Eagles have now won five of their last seven matches. Favre and Hepworth have remained hot after winning seven of their last 10 matches.
Awaiting the Golden Eagles next weekend is a trip to the Tiger Beach Challenge in Baton Rouge, La. They will battle three teams that have been nationally ranked this season, along with Spring Hill. The Badgers and Golden Eagles have already squared off on three different occasions.Â
