THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Southern Miss was able to resume the rain and darkness-shorted second round and then the final segment, but the Golden Eagles were unable to build off their early successes and finished No. 14.
Henriette Syr, who matched her career-low of a 68 in Monday's opening round, finished in a tie for 14th. It marked her best finish of the season. Valentina Haupt improved her score in all three rounds, finishing with a 75 in the third. Southern Miss was tied for sixth after the opening round.
"We are chalking this up as a slow start to the spring," head coach Lucy Nunn said. "We put ourselves in a good position after the first round and just struggled to maintain that momentum over the next two rounds. We have some time to recoup and get ready for UNF, so we are learning from this week and already focused on what's ahead."
Seven of the 15 teams were ranked in the top-50. Friend Chompitakdacha held steady in her first collegiate outing, carding a 5-over 77 in the second round. Valeria Pichardo was also playing in her second tournament of the season (and third of her career).
Houston, the tourney host, claimed the crown with an 8-over 872, three strokes ahead of Purdue. No. 9 Kent State's Pimnipa Panthong also had a hole-in-one on No. 14 (par-3).
Southern Miss now looks ahead to the UNF Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla., from Monday-Tuesday.
