HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team has embarked on a trip to the desert, set to play in the stacked MountainView Collegiate in Saddlebooke, Ariz. from Friday to Sunday.
The Golden Eagles are competing in their second Mountain/Pacific time zone tournament this season, also doing so in the Golfweek Challenge in Vail, Colo. in September. Prior to that, the program had not made such a western move since hosting the Baja Invitational with Northern Illinois in Ensenada, Mexico in Feb. 2008.
The par-72, 6,218-yard Preserve Golf Club will host Houston, No. 43 Iowa State, Kansas State, Mizzou (both hosts), North Texas, No. 31 Oregon State, SMU, Texas A&M, Texas State, UNLV, No. 22 Washington and Wisconsin. Southern Miss will be represented by Friend Chompitakdacha, Cassidy Evreniadis, Valentina Haupt, Miranda Holt and Henriette Syr.
The Golden Eagles are looking to build off valuable experience from weathered tournaments at the ICON Invitational and UNF Collegiate, where the team finished No. 14 and 12, respectively.
Haupt is the only member to have competed in every tournament this season. Chompitakdacha, a freshman spring enrollee, has competed in both tournaments and improved by eight strokes her last time out, carding an 11-over 227 in Jacksonville. The senior Holt held the same score the last time out, and has improved her score by five and four strokes in each of her last two outings.
