STARKVILLE, Miss. – Tanner Allen doubled into the rightfield corner to drive home Jordan Westburg in the bottom of the ninth to lift No. 9 Mississippi State to a 4-3 victory over No. 21 Southern Miss Sunday afternoon in front of 9,449 at Dudy Noble Field.
After winning the opening game of the series 1-0 in 10 innings on Friday, the Golden Eagles (4-2) dropped the final two games of the series to the Bulldogs (6-1).
The Golden Eagles outhit MSU 8-7 in the contest, but could not overcome three errors including one with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
After Ryan Och had entered the ninth and got the first two MSU hitters, Westburg reached when Storme Cooper fielded a grounder at short and threw wide of the bag. The next hitter, Allen, then knocked the first pitch he saw from Och and Westburg scored the winning run from first base.
Allen also drove in the Bulldogs' first run in the opening inning, scoring Westburg, who had doubled to give the home squad the early 1-0 advantage.
Hunter Slater, who led the Golden Eagles with a pair of hits, tied the score in the third with a single to left-centerfield that plated Fred Franklin, who opened the frame with a walk.
MSU added two more runs in the bottom half of that inning as Macnamee drove in a pair with a single up the middle.
The Golden Eagles tied the score again with two runs in the sixth. After a couple of strikeouts to open the inning, Hunter LeBlanc belted his first collegiate homer to rightfield before Cooper added a double that one hopped the wall in right and Franklin knocked him in with a single to leftfield.
Despite suffering the loss, Och (1-1) was one of four Golden Eagle relievers to not allow an earned run over the 6 1/3 frames. Och fanned one and gave up an unearned run and a hit in his loss.
Cole Gordon (2-0) threw the final two innings, allowing three walks and fanning two to earn the victory.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday, Feb. 26, when they open up an eight-game homestand with a single contest against UNO. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
