HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Eight New Orleans pitchers checked Southern Miss on six hits as the Privateers eked out a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park.
Â
Southern Miss (4-3) dropped its third consecutive game, but first at home. UNO (6-1) hasn't lost since its season opener.
Â
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Matt Wallner doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Will McGillis.
Â
But the Privateers chased Southern Miss starter Jarod Wright with four consecutive hits, including an RBI-single by catcher Beau Bratton and run-scoring double by outfielder Luther Woullard.
Â
Southern Miss stranded 10 runners over the final eight innings and managed just one run for the third time in four games. The Golden Eagles have scored just six runs in those last four games.
Â
Brandon Mitchell (1-0), the second of UNO's pitchers on the evening, got the victory. He allowed an unearned run on two hits, walking one and striking out one.
Â
Reeves Martin picked up his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed a hit and struck out three.
Â
Wright (0-1) gave up two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out five.
Â
Wallner, who went hitless in three games at Mississippi State this weekend, had two, opposite-field doubles Tuesday. Leadoff man Gabe Montenegro also had two hits.
Â
UNO finished with nine hits off seven Southern Miss pitchers, though the bullpen allowed just three hits and no runs in 6 2/3 innings. Bratton, Woullard and center fielder Wade Raburn each had two hits for the Privateers.
Â
Tuesday marked the opening of an eight-game homestand by the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss is scheduled to host Gonzaga in a three-game series this weekend at Pete Taylor Park.
