Southern Miss Falls in Inaugural Beach Match

MOBILE, Ala. -Â History was made Friday night for the Southern Miss beach volleyball program, even despite its loss to Coastal Carolina (1-1, 0-0 ASUN) in Mobile, Ala. The Golden Eagles (0-1, 0-0 CCSA) fell 4-1, but the program saw its first win on court two.Â
Cyan Blackdeer and Abbey Wilson will go down as the first pair in Golden Eagle history to win a match after the No. 2 pairing swept Coastal Carolina en route to a 21-17, 21-18 win. The duo was only one of two Golden Eagle pairs that played two-set matches. The other four matches played out in dramatic fashion after going three sets.Â
In an exhibition match at the No. 6 pair, Chloe Klusman and Kinsley Hanback fell in three sets after taking a first-set lead. The pair dropped the second set 21-16, before falling 20-18 in a third-set thriller. Graduate transfers Jessica Austin and Lindsey Smith fell at the No. 5 pairing in straight sets after narrowly losing the first set.Â
Breleigh Favre and Olivia Hepworth won their first set 21-15, but dropped the final two sets to the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina picked up another win at No. 3, beating Piper Matsumoto and Kellie Garraway in another three-set thriller. At the top pairing, Kylie Grandy and Lindsey Legg dominated the first set with a 21-12 showing. However, the pair dropped the second set and then fell 15-13 in the third set.Â
In total, Southern Miss won the first set in five of the six matches and had nine sets decided by three points or less.Â
The Golden Eagles will take the sand against Coastal Carolina at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow. Following that match, they will see Spring Hill at 3 p.m. to close out the weekend.
