HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Friday will mark history for the Southern Miss beach volleyball program as it travels to Mobile, Ala. On the campus of Spring Hill, the Golden Eagles will battle Coastal Carolina in the programs first beach volleyball match at 5:30 p.m. They will turn around on Saturday for another match against Coastal Carolina, followed by one more against Spring Hill.
On Wednesday, Kylie Grandy was named to the 2019 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Beach Volleyball Watch List. Grandy, a Graduate Student, finished her Southern Miss indoor career in December ranked second all-time in career kills by a Golden Eagle with 1,572. The success Grandy sustained in her senior season didn't go unnoticed, as the North Carolina native earned AVCA All-American honors. Â
Abbey Wilson and Olivia Hepworth bring sand experience to the Golden Eagles after the two played in a tournament for Southern Miss in the fall. Transitioning from the indoor team to the sand, Breleigh Favre, Madison Lawler, Kellie Garraway, Cyan Blackdeer, and Kinsley Hanback will add depth to the team. Graduate transfers Lindsey Smith and Jessica Austin will bring added collegiate experience to a team with nine underclassmen. Lindsey Legg, Chloe Klusman, and Piper Matsumoto will don the Black and Gold for the first time after transferring into the program.Â
Scouting Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers, who open their season against Spring Hill early Friday afternoon, head to Mobile a season removed from going 1-15. They found their only win of the season when they knocked off Missouri State late in the season. Over the last two seasons, Coastal Carolina has won only two games. The Chanticleers received votes in the 2019 Beach Volleyball Preseason Rankings.Â
Scouting Spring Hill
After playing two matches against Coastal Carolina, the Golden Eagles will finish their weekend with a 5 p.m. showdown against Spring Hill. The Badgers, who finished third at the AVCA Small College Championships in 2018, return three girls that saw time at the No. 1 pairing last season. Saturday's match will be the first of five meetings between the two this season. Former Badger standout Hannah Masoner will return to her alma mater as she heads to Mobile as the graduate assistant coach.Â
