Golden Eagles Show Fight on Day Two

MOBILE, Ala. - The Southern Miss beach volleyball team fell to Coastal Carolina and Spring Hill on Saturday to end the first tournament of the 2019 season. The Golden Eagles (0-3, 0-0 CCSA) fell in straight sets against against Coastal Carolina (2-2, 0-0 ASUN) in the first match of Saturday afternoon, which was the second loss to the Chanticleers this season. Southern Miss was able to get a point on the board against Spring Hill (2-1), losing 4-1 to the host team.
Match 1 - Coastal Carolina
Southern Miss saw its only win against the Chanticleers when Chloe Klusman and Kinsley Hanback won a three-set dazzler in the exhibition match on court six. Coastal Carolina responded with two-set sweeps at the No. 5, No. 4 and No. 2 pairs. Abbey Wilson and Cyan Blackdeer fell at No. 2, while Breleigh Favre and Olivia Hepworth fell at No. 4. The other pair to get swept was Madison Lawler and Jessica Austin at No. 5.
At No. 3, Piper Motsumoto and Kellie Garraway responded to a first-set loss with a 26-24 win to force a third set. From there, the pair lost 15-8 to Coastal's third pair. Kylie Grandy and Lindsey Legg fell at No. 1 after the duo picked up a win in the first set. Overall, five sets were decided by three points or fewer.
Match 2 - Spring Hill
Four of the six games against Spring Hill took all three sets to decide a winner. In the exhibition match at No. 6, Klusman and Hanback traded sets with the Badgers until they fell in the final frame. Lindsey Smith slid back into the No. 5 pair with Lawler, and the duo fell in straight sets. Favre and Hepworth also fell in straight sets at the No. 4 pairing.
Matsumoto and Garraway started hot for the Golden Eagles en route to a win at No. 3. The Golden Eagle pair escaped the first set with a 21-18 win, but were unable to secure the sweep in the second set. They bounced back in the third set to win it by two points and get Southern Miss on the board. The Badgers responded with a three-set win over Blackdeer and Wilson. The two were able to win the second set after falling behind 1-0. From there, Spring Hill took a dramatic third set by two points. In similar fashion, Legg and Grandy fell in three sets as well. The pair won the second set and were unable to grab the third set, falling 19-17. The meeting between Spring Hill and Southern Miss was the first of five for the two in the 2019 season.
The Golden Eagles head to Covington, La. next weekend for a four-game set against Huntingdon, New Orleans, Nicholls State and Spring Hill. The first match is slated for 11 a.m. on March 1.
