TROY, Ala. - The Southern Miss (6-0, 0-0 C-USA) women's tennis team extended its win streak to six games on Sunday afternoon after defeating Troy (2-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) on the road. The 6-1 win puts the Golden Eagles one win shy of tying their best start since the 2016 season.
In doubles, Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse found themselves with a 6-0 win right off the bat on court one. Rikeetha Pereira and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan followed with a 6-4 win on court two, which secured the doubles point for Southern Miss. With that point already locked up, Katia de la Garza and Monique Burton played out their match on court three. The duo escaped with a 7-6 win.
"The team stepped up well to win the doubles point and win five singles matches today," said assistant coach Piyanart Engineer. "We have been working very hard in practice on the tactical aspects and it helped us to beat a good Troy team 6-1."
Troy tied things early after Tanit Lopez fell on court five in straight sets. It was all Southern Miss from that point on. Yazgan snagged Southern Miss' second point on court six with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Maria Casas Blas. Amaning followed on court one with a three-set dazzler. The France native dropped her first and stormed back to take the second set via a 7-5 score. She followed that with a 6-2 win in the third set to secure a big point for Southern Miss.
Jerse put the match out of reach after handling Celia Estevan on court three. Jerse surpassed 60 wins in a Southern Miss uniform with a two-set sweep. Pereira notched a three-set win on court two to put the Golden Eagles up 5-1. De la Garza followed with another three-set win to close the road trip for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss will travel to South Alabama on February 23.
