Women's Tennis Falls in Thriller

MOBILE, Ala. - In a 4-2 loss to South Alabama (10-0, 0-0 Sun Belt), the Southern Miss women's tennis team fell for the first time in the 2019 season. The 6-0 start by the Golden Eagles (6-1, 0-0 C-USA) tied for the best start since the 2016 season.
On Saturday afternoon, Rikeetha Pereira and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan got off to a hot start for the Golden Eagles. At No. 2 doubles, the pair opened with a 6-1 win over Yu Fujioka and Yurie Takanishi. The Jaguars responded with a win of their own at No. 3, knocking off Katia de la Garza and Monique Burton. Tied 1-1 in doubles, Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse delivered a clutch win at the No. 1 pairing. Their 7-6 win secured the doubles point for the Golden Eagles, which marked their seventh match in which they won that point.
Switching over to singles with a 1-0 lead, Yazgan fell in straight sets on court six. Anastasija Cobanovic also fell on court five in straight sets. Down 2-1, de la Garza tied the contest with a two-set win over Nikola Kohoutova. The Jaguars regained the lead with a two-set win at No. 3 singles, and then secured the win with a three-set thriller on court one. On court one, Amaning grabbed a 6-3 win in the first set, but only managed to win one game over the final two sets.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on March 2.
