BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  – The Southern Miss (2-24, 0-11 C-USA) women's volleyball team fell to UAB (12-12, 4-7 C-USA) in three sets (23-25, 20-25, 21-25) on Friday night in Ruston, La. Sophomore Kinsley Hanback continued to stay hot, tallying a game-high 14 kills.
The Golden Eagles erased a five-point deficit in the first set to quickly tie the frame at 10. The Blazers responded and took the lead, which Southern Miss was able to erase again. Back-to-back Piper Matsumoto service aces tied it at 14-all before Hanback built the lead to two with a kill. The Blazers and Golden Eagles continued to trade runs, but UAB ultimately took the final two points to take a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers took another early lead in the second set, building an eight-point advantage that the Golden Eagles couldn't erase. UAB, after a Hanback kill cut the lead to four, would hit a late run to close out the set.  UAB carried its momentum into the final set, jumping to a 7-3 lead. Down eight in that frame, the Golden Eagles hit a 7-0 run to pull within two points of a UAB team that was five points away from sweeping Southern Miss. Despite the late push, UAB was able to pull out a 25-21 win.
Matsumoto registered her 10th double-double of the season, dishing out 30 assists and 10 digs in three sets. Senior Ashley Chapman joined Hanback as the only other Golden Eagle to reach the 10-kill mark, finishing with 12. To go along with her 14 kills, Hanback swatted four UAB attacks.
Junior Madison Lawler and Sophomore Kellie Garraway each added nine digs, while seven Golden Eagles recorded a block. Matsumoto served up a team-high two aces.
