HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â Reaching 1,000 career digs in Sunday's five-set (21-25, 22-25, 26-24, 29-27, 11-15) loss to UTEP (11-12, 4-6 C-USA), junior libero Madison Lawler joined an elite club in Southern Miss (2-23, 0-10 C-USA) volleyball program. The Grapevine, Texas natives milestone dig came in the fourth when she made a one-handed stab at a UTEP attack that Ashley Chapman later slammed into the Miners side for a Southern Miss point.Â
Lawler became just the 21st Golden Eagle to reach the 1,000 dig mark, doing so in 318 sets. She finished with a game-high 24 digs in a near comeback by the Golden Eagles.Â
The Golden Eagles were able to respond from a two-set deficit behind sophomore Kinsley Hanback's four kills in the third set. A UTEP service error jumpstarted a 4-1 run by the Golden Eagles that put the home team up five early in the set. The Miners momentarily stopped the bleeding but a Piper Matsumoto kill, Lawler ace, Miners attack error, and a Hanback kill extended the Southern Miss lead to eight. Again, UTEP climbed within one of the Southern Miss lead after a 6-0 run. Another Miners attack error gave Southern Miss set point, but the Golden Eagles gave up three consecutive points to tie the set at 24-all. Aided by a Kess Krutsinger kill and UTEP attack error, the Golden Eagles held onto win the third set.
In what ended up being a wild fourth set, the Golden Eagles jumped to an early lead that was never cut into until UTEP took a 23-22 lead at a crucial point in the frame. After a lead as large as seven disappeared in that stretch, back-to-back kills by Matsumoto and Ashley Chapman put Southern Miss at set point. UTEP scored again and would then hold off three more Southern Miss set points. Chapman finally sealed the deal with her seventh kill of the set, the most by any player in a set during the match. Hanback and Krutsinger each added four kills in that set.Â
UTEP jumped to an early lead in the winner-take-all fifth set after a 6-2 run to open things up. The Golden Eagles were able to cut the Miners lead to one with a Chapman kill at the end of a 5-1 run. From there, UTEP was able to hold off another furious Southern Miss comeback attempt en route to a 15-12 win. The win moved the Miners to 4-6 in Conference USA play and dropped Southern Miss to 0-10.Â
In the hard-fought loss, Chapman sent a career-high 17 kills into the UTEP side on 51 attempts. The Mobile, Ala. reached her third double-double after adding 12 digs. Hanback, a fellow Alabama native, reached a career-high 14 kills on a .480 hitting percentage, the highest of her career. Matsumoto penciled in her ninth double-double after recording a game-high 43 assists and dishing out 12 digs. The junior also added a career-best seven kills on 13 attempts.Â
As a team, the Golden Eagles matched their highest total in blocks with nine. Krutsinger's six blocks paced the defense while Chloe Klusman added three of her own.Â
