HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â The Southern Miss women's volleyball team is set to embark on a two-game road trip that will wrap up its 2019 away slate. The Golden Eagles will head to UAB on Friday night for a 7 p.m. showdown at Bartow Arena before heading to LA Tech on Sunday.Â
The Last Time Out
Southern Miss, who ended a four-game homestand last Sunday, fell in five sets to a UTEP team that the Golden Eagles hadn't lost to in five years. The Golden Eagles climbed out of a two-set hole to tie the match at four-all, which forced a winner-take-all fifth set. Despite having momentum on its side, Southern Miss fell in the final set, 15-11. The win moved the Miners into sole possession of the last spot for the C-USA Championships.Â
In the fourth set, junior libero Madison Lawler became the 21st Golden Eagle to reach 1,000 career digs. The milestone came on a monster dig that Ashley Chapman would later slam into the UTEP set. Currently sitting at 1,002 digs, Lawler finished with a game-high 23. Chapman, who's senior season has been one for the ages, exploded for a career-high 17 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Kinsley Hanback erupted for a career-best 14 kills at a .480 hitting clip. Freshman Kess Krutsinger went for 12 kills on 29 attempts. Junior setter Piper Matsumoto's 43 assists, 12 digs, and seven kills earned the Fort Myers, Fla. native her ninth double-double of the season.Â
Match Notes
On a four-game skid, UAB sits at 11-12 with a 3-7 C-USA record. The Blazers hold conference wins over Middle Tennessee, UTEP, and FIU. The four-game skid includes losses to Middle Tennessee, WKU, Rice, and FAU.
Emma Mitchell leads the offensive charge for the Blazers, tallying a team-high 265 kills. As a team, the Blazers are seventh in C-USA with a .210 hitting percentage. Mitchell's 3.19 kills per set rank her eighth in the conference. Rachel Morse leads the Blazers with 691 assists, averaging 8.64 per set. Defensively, Anna D'Cruz has swatted a team-best 82 attacks. Brianna Muller's 216 assists put her in the lead for the most amongst all Blazers.Â
All-Time Series
Friday's match will be the 50th installment of Southern Miss vs. UAB. Dating back to 1981, the Golden Eagles hold a one-win advantage over the Blazers. The Golden Eagles have also won six of the last seven meetings, including the last two on the road.
