HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â In its inaugural 'Serve Up a Cure' match, the Southern Miss (2-26, 0-13 C-USA) women's volleyball team fell just short against FIU (10-15, 3-10 C-USA), dropping a five-setter (19-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 10-15) after making a furious comeback attempt.Â
With only two games left in their Golden Eagle careers, seniors Ashley Berry and Ashley Chapman each had impressive performances against the Panthers. The two combined for 28 kills and five blocks, while Berry tallied a team-high 16 kills on a .238 hitting clip. Sophomore Kinsley Hanback joined in on the offensive onslaught by muscling 14 kills into the FIU end on a game-high .423 hitting percentage. Chapman finished with her fourth double-double of the season.Â
Trailing by three points midway through the second set, Southern Miss rallied out of a timeout when Hanback recorded a kill that preceded four consecutive FIU errors. That powered the Golden to a two-pint lead, which the Panthers would never answer. FIU managed to fight off one set point, but another Hanback kill tied the match at one. Southern Miss took a one-point lead in the middle of the third set only to see FIU eat up that lead via a late run. The Panthers took a one-set lead after Hanback narrowly missed a kill, but instead was an attack error.Â
In perhaps the most dominant performance of the night, Southern Miss quickly jumped to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set causing FIU to use an early timeout in an attempt to slow the torrid pace. The Golden Eagles continued to press out of the timeout, extending their lead to seven after Chapman sent a missile into the FIU side. The Panthers managed to cut the deficit to two before Southern Miss went on an 8-2 run that was jumpstarted by a Gillian Hidalgo kill. The Golden Eagles stayed hot en route to a Kess Krutsinger kill that forced a winner-take-all set.Â
The Panthers quickly took control in the fifth set only to have the Golden Eagles make it a one-point match after Piper Matsumoto used a crafty setters dump to make it 11-10. Despite the slight momentum change, FIU closed out the set on a 4-0 run, winning 15-10.Â
Matsumoto's performance garnered the junior her 12th double-double performance of the season. She dished out 49 assists, 10 digs, three kills, and two blocks in front of a crowd dressed in orange. Junior libero Madison Lawler, who was recognized pregame for joining the 1,000 digs club, recorded a game-high 29 digs to go along with three assists. Both Lawler and DS Lindsey Legg recorded a kill in the loss. Hidalgo finished her night with 11 kills, while Krutsinger added five.Â
