HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â A pair of Southern Miss (3-26, 1-13 C-USA) seniors went out in style on Saturday afternoon against LA Tech (13-15, 3-11 C-USA), knocking off the Lady Techsters in four sets (16-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-15) at Reed Green Coliseum. The Golden Eagles stormed back from an early deficit on Ashley Berry and Ashley Chapman's Senior Day.Â
Berry and Chapman combined for 18 kills in their final outing donning the Black and Gold, while Berry's .304 hitting clip was only second to her .429 clip against Mississippi State early in the season. Despite LA Tech controlling the first set, the two seniors went for seven of the 12 Southern Miss kills in the opening frame.Â
The Golden Eagles came alive in the second set, using a 4-0 run to pull ahead by five after trading points with LA Tech for much of the set. A fury of attacks from the Lady Techsters stymied the Southern Miss lead momentarily, but Berry and Sophomore Kinsley Hanback unloaded a pair of rockets to tie the match prior to the third set. Hanback exploded for a set-high five kills for the Golden Eagles on just eight attempts.Â
The two rivals opened the third set by trading a handful of points before Southern Miss rattled off three consecutive scores to erase a LA Tech lead. Falling behind again, the Golden Eagles used an 8-2 run to pull ahead by two points. Again, LA Tech responded en route to tying the set at 18-all. Freshman Gillian Hidalgo sent a kill into the LA Tech end that started a 7-2 run that featured a Kess Krutsinger kill, Piper Matsumoto ace, and another Krutsinger kill. The Lady Techsters decided their own fate in the third set, giving Southern Miss its 25th point and second set win on an attacking error.Â
After trailing 2-1 to open the fourth set, Southern Miss would never trail again. A 4-1 run flipped the lead to the Golden Eagle side, which they then extended to 11 courtesy of a LA Tech attacking error. The Lady Techsters cut into the deficit by rattling off three consecutive points, but the Golden Eagles proved to be too much. Hidalgo gave Southern Miss match point, then Berry's final kill as a Golden Eagle secured them their first C-USA win of the season.Â
Krutsinger led the way for Southern Miss, tallying 10 kills at a .300 clip to go along with four blocks. Hanback joined the two seniors with nine kills and a .300 hitting percentage. Matsumoto's 33 assists and 13 digs gave the junior her 12th and final double-double of 2019. The Fort Myers, Fla. native also added three kills and two blocks.Â
Two days after being recognized for joining the 1,000 digs club, junior libero Madison Lawler posted a game-high 18 digs and sent three service aces in the LA Tech end. Kellie Garraway capped her sophomore season with 10 digs and an assist.Â
In the last 16 meetings, Southern Miss has come out on top 15 times, including today's contest.Â
