Offensive Charge Pushes Golden Eagles Past Arkansas-Pine Bluff

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â Kess Krutsinger exploded in a break-out performance as Southern Miss (2-22, 0-9 C-USA) edged out Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7-22, 5-9) in four sets (25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25,10) on Friday night. The Golden Eagles finished their final nonconference battle hitting at a .196 clip, highlighted by a .310 hitting percentage in the fourth set.Â
Krutsinger's .375 hitting percentage was a career-best when recording at least 10 kills in a match. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native finished with a career-high 14 kills and seven blocks. That mark is the most by a Golden Eagle this season.Â
Knotted at nine-all in the first set, Krutsinger rattled off three kills in a four-play span that built the Southern Miss lead to three. The Golden Eagles then built that lead to eight before the Golden Lions sliced it to just five, but an Arkansas-Pine Bluff attack error secured a first-set win for the home team. Freshman Gillian Hidalgo and sophomore Kinsley Hanback each had three kills in the first set.Â
The Golden Lions jumped out to a five-point advantage, forcing Southern Miss head coach Stephanie Radecki to use a timeout. A Krutsinger kill and Golden Lion attack error gave Southern Miss the lead momentarily after the timeout, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff responded and never relinquished the lead again. Senior Ashley Chapman added three kills as the Golden Eagles hit at a .133 clip in the set.Â
The Golden Eagles opened the third set on a mission, jumping to a 7-1 lead in a matter of minutes. The Golden Lions stopped the bleeding after a timeout, but Southern Miss rattled off a 9-0 run and built the lead to nine. Arkansas-Pine Bluff popped off three points and then back-to-back errors by the team gave Southern Miss life again. From there, Hidalgo and junior Addie Ashton smacked a pair of kills to give the Golden Eagles a one-set lead.Â
For the second consecutive set, the Golden Eagles opened a 7-1 lead and never let Arkansas-Pine Bluff climb back into the contest. En route to a 25-10Â win in the fourth set, Southern Miss ended the night on an 11-2 run to secure its second win of the season. Hidalgo added a game-high 15 kills while Chapman chipped in with nine kills and 18 digs. Hanback finished with seven kills and two blocks.Â
Matsumoto dished out 43 assists and 18 digs as the Fort Myers, Fla. native wound up with her eighth double-double of the season. Junior libero Madison Lawler had 26 assists and her four service aces were one away from her career mark. Kellie Garraway went for 17 digs and Lindsey Legg added 13 of her own.Â
