HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Despite winning the first set against Middle Tennessee (10-13, 3-5 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon, the Southern Miss (1-22, 0-9 C-USA) women's volleyball team fell in four sets in front of a boisterous Reed Green Coliseum crowd.
With the 2009 Conference USA Regular Season Championship Team on hand, the Golden Eagles quickly jumped on the Blue Raiders behind five first-set kills from senior Ashley Chapman. Southern Miss relinquished the lead late in the set but was able to take care of business after a 5-1 run that was capped by a Kess Krutsinger kill. Junior setter Piper Matsumoto also dished out 14 assists in the 26-24 first-set win.
With a one-set lead, the Golden Eagles carried plenty of momentum into the second set. However, Middle Tennessee broke off a 4-0 run late in the set to pull ahead by four points. A kill from Kinsley Hanback momentarily cut the deficit to one point, but the Blue Raiders managed to build a three-point lead and ultimately took the second set, 25-23.
With the match tied at one, Middle Tennessee rallied to take the third set when the Golden Eagles led by as many as four points. Trailing by one, Middle Tennessee used a 5-1 run to secure the 25-22 win. In order to keep the match alive, Southern Miss needed to win the fourth frame. Middle Tennessee, who knocked off C-USA power North Texas on the road two nights before, extended its winning streak to three matches after taking the fourth set, 25-15.
Chapman exploded for her second double-double as a Golden Eagle, finishing with a team-high 12 kills and 13 digs. Liana Guillemaud and Kess Krutsinger joined in on the offensive charge, tallying 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior libero Madison Lawler finished with 25 digs and Matsumoto finished with 40 assists.
Redshirt freshman Lindsey Legg found her first-career kill in the second set when the defensive specialist took a hefty swing from the back row. Legg also added eight digs and two service aces. Sophomore Addie Ashton smacked five kills and exploded for a career-high four blocks.
