CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Southern Miss (1-20, 0-7, C-USA) women's volleyball team ended its quick trip to Charlotte (12-11, 2-5 C-USA) with a three-set (17-25, 12-25, 22-25) loss on Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, Ashley Chapman produced another career-best performance.
The senior recorded the first double-double of her career, dishing out 18 digs and a career-high 10 kills. As the match went on, Chapman's numbers continued to improve. After smacking just two kills in the first set, the Alabama native added three in the second set and five more in the third set.
In the first set, Charlotte utilized a .370 hitting percentage to jump on the Golden Eagles towards the latter half of the frame. The two found themselves tied nine times in the set, but the 49ers used a 12-3 run to break the tie and secure the win. Kaile Tuisamatatele and Liana Guillemaud each tallied three kills in the set.
The 49ers continued that run into the second set. Southern Miss fell behind early en route to a 25-12 second-set loss. In the set, Summer Johnson and Kess Krutsinger teamed up for one of the two Golden Eagle blocks during the match.
The Golden Eagles were able to bounce back from that tough loss and built a three-point lead early in the final set. Leading by as many as six, it looked as if the match was destined for a fourth set. However, Charlotte embarked on a 15-7 run to close out its come back. Chapman and Madison Lawler each recorded a set-high 10 digs.
Offensively, Chapman (10), Guillemaud (6), Krutsinger (5), Tuisamatatele (5), and Hallie Phelan (4) combined for 30 of the Golden Eagles' 33 kills. Junior setter Piper Matsumoto added 28 assists, five digs, and a kill. Lawler ended her trip to Charlotte with 22 digs, one service ace, and an assist. Tuisamatatele and Phelan teamed up for the other Southern Miss block.
