Golden Eagles Fall Despite Late Charge

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â Despite a late charge in the third set, the Southern Miss (1-21, 0-8 C-USA) women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to FAU (11-7, 5-2 C-USA) on Friday night at Reed Green Coliseum. Falling 15-25, 18-25, and 22-25, the Golden Eagles were paced by Gillian Hidalgo's 10 kills and Madison Lawler's 29 digs.Â
FAU handled Southern Miss in the matches first two sets en route to a two-set to none lead. The Owls utilized a .310 hitting percentage in the second set to close out the Golden Eagles in the second set. In the first two sets, the Golden Eagles were only able to hit at a .049 and .171 hitting clip, respectively. Also over the course of the first two sets, Chapman tallied seven of her nine kills. Lawler, a junior from Grapevine, Texas, dished out 18 assists in those two sets.Â
Southern Miss, who needed to win the third set to keep the match going, erased a seven-point deficit to get within one point. The Golden Eagles hit a 7-1 run during that stretch thanks to three Hidalgo kills and two kills from freshman Kess Krutsinger. With the match at 23-22 in favor of FAU, the Owls scored the final two points to secure their 11th win of the season.Â
Following Chapman and Hidalgo's offensive production, Krutsinger recorded seven kills on 15 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage. Kinsley Hanback and Ashley Berry each finished with three kills. Junior setter Piper Matsumoto dished out 27 assists, eight digs, and a service ace. Matsumoto and Berry combined for Southern Miss' lone block. Lawler's 29 digs were a game-high. Sophomore DS Kellie Garraway had eight seven digs for the Golden Eagles.Â

Southern Miss will welcome home its 2009 Conference USA Regular Season Championship team on Sunday when Middle Tennessee comes to town. The match will start at 1 p.m. with a ceremony honoring the 2009 team coming between the second and third sets.Â
