Southern Miss XC Finishes 2nd at Blazer Classic

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagle cross country squad placed second at the second-annual Blazer Classic held by UAB.

Overall, five out of the 11 runners ran to new personal bests at UAB. The team finished with an average time of 21:23 and had a total of 94 points.Â

Senior Sandra Szpott led the team, finishing in third place out of the 215 runners with a time of 20:52.26, a new personal best. Sophomore Lina May came in 12th with a new personal best of 21:21:98. Emma Kate Holdbrooks finished in 15th place with a time of 21:24.24, a new personal best for the redshirt junior. Monika Gebarzewska came in 20th, crossing the finish line in 21:29.14; a new personal best for her. Kate Mattox finished in 45th with a time of 21:50.43. Sarah McMillon finished just behind her in 21:51.42 in 46th place. That's a new personal best for the senior. Regen McGee finished in 55th place with a 22:06.70 time. In 66th was Savannah McMillon in 22:21.17, and in 72nd was Katelyn Cartwright in 22:24.08. Theresa Harto finished in 88th in 22:48.48. Rounding out the top-100 was freshman Carlin Beal in 23:02.14. This was both Beal and Cartwright's first 6k race.Â

The Golden Eagles finished ahead of Charlotte, South Alabama, Mississippi State, Samford, Alabama, Memphis, Belmont, UAB, Kennesaw State, North Alabama, Florida Atlantic, Troy, Northern Colorado, Montevallo, Mercer, Nicholls, Birmingham-Southern, Spartanburg Methodist, Marion Military Institute, Fort Valley State, Mississippi Valley State, and Mississippi Uni. for Women. Southern Miss finished behind Florida State.

This was the last regular-season meet for the Golden Eagles. Next up will be the Conference Championships, hosted this year by WKU in Bowling Green, Ky. The meet will take place on Nov. 2 and it will be a 5k race.
