
Southern Miss Falls to FAU 2-0 on Sunday Afternoon

The Golden Eagles split their Florida road trip with a 1-1 record over the weekend
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Southern Miss soccer team (8-3-0, 2-2-0 C-USA) fell to Florida Atlantic (7-6-0, 4-0-0 C-USA) by a final score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla. Â
The match was a hard-fought defensive battle between both teams the entire first half as the Southern Miss and FAU defensive units prevented each other from scoring.
The match remained scoreless until the 46:03 mark in the second half when FAU's Ebba Blomqvist produced the first goal of the contest. Blomqvist scored on a penalty kick, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead.
Pernille Velta netted the second goal of the match for FAU at the 61:24 mark in the second half. Velta scored on a ball that was ricocheted after the original shot on goal was blocked, providing FAU with a 2-0 lead.
Southern Miss ended the match with seven total saves. Goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich who started the match in goal for the Golden Eagles recorded five saves. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sarah Preston who entered the match in place of Mindnich at the 63:28 mark recorded two saves, and the Golden Eagles seventh save of the contest was credited to the team.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Friday, October 5 when they host C-USA opponent Charlotte (8-3-0, 4-0-0 C-USA) at 4:00 p.m. (CT) at the USM Track & Field and Soccer Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss.
