The Golden Eagles ended the 49ers undefeated C-USA record
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (9-3-0, 3-2-0 C-USA) defeated the Charlotte 49ers (8-4-0, 4-1-0 C-USA) on Friday afternoon, ending the 49ers undefeated C-USA record.
Charlotte entered the match as C-USA's top ranked team. The match was a battle on both ends of the pitch the entire afternoon.
The lone goal of the match produced by Southern Miss freshman midfielder Olivia Durham at the 9:11 mark in the first half of play eventually proved to be the difference in the game. Durham was assisted by senior midfielder Hannah Abrams who weaved her way precisely through the Charlotte defense feeding Durham a nearly perfect pass that Durham placed in the back of the net.
The Golden Eagles came close to netting a second goal in the contest, but a last second team save by Charlotte when goalkeeper Abby Stapleton vacated the net kept the score 1-0.
The Southern Miss defense did more than their fair share to help lead the Golden Eagles to victory, turning in one of their best performances of the season.
Seniors Ashton Stennis and Ola Akinniyi along with sophomore Caitlin Pierce have been the heart of a defense that has now shut out seven of their 12 opponents on the season. All three defenders played the full 90:00 minutes against Charlotte, helping propel Southern Miss to victory.
Goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich who has become a one of the most reliable goalkeepers in C-USA this season, finished the match with her third clean sheet of the season after recording three saves in the contest.
For Southern Miss, their win on Friday was their first against Charlotte since October 2, 2015 when they defeated the 49ers 1-0 in Hattiesburg. Friday's win marks the second for Southern Miss against Charlotte in program history.
Southern Miss will return to action on Thursday, October 11 when they host UTSA (4-5-1, 0-2-1 C-USA) at 4:00 p.m. (CT) at the Southern Miss Track & Field and Soccer Complex.
