MOBILE, Ala. -- Southern Miss posted its second-best round in school history on Sunday (282). But it likely did not expect to take it up an extra notch on Monday, finishing with a school-record 872 at the USA Intercollegiate.
The Golden Eagles found themselves in 11th place after the first day before putting together sound performances over the following two rounds to finish fifth out of 17 teams. This also came in the same tournament and course as when the team posted a then-school record 877 en route to the first-place finish (Sept. 12, 2017).Â
"We had a few struggles getting started," first-year head coach Lucy Nunn said. "We had a really good round yesterday in getting back on track. Today was just an overall good day."
Julie Baker went 2-under-par on the back nine to finish in a tie for 11th. It also came on the heels of her career-low 69 on Sunday.Â
Henriette Syr missed the 2017-18 season due to a shoulder injury, and more than shook off the rust in her return to the links. She posted a 76 on Day One before following up with a 70 and 72 that earned her a No. 19 spot on the final leaderboard.
Valentina Haupt was the third Golden Eagle to finish at par (72)Â in the final round. The only school to have more than three golfers finish at par or better was Cal Baptist, which took the title with a 4-under 860.
"We were awesome across the board," Nunn said. "Val struggled early and fought back. Henriette hung in there, and Julie too. We were able to clean up a few things, and it was a good first tournament to start building on the rest of the season."
The Golden Eagles' previous-best three-round performance came Oct. 25, 2017 at the Pat Bradley Invitational, a 9-over 873, followed by the aforementioned USA Intercollegiate (877) and Golden Eagle Jam (880), both from the 2016-17 season.
Southern Miss now turns its attention to the Golfweek Challenge, which will take place from Monday-Wednesday in Vail, Colo.
