
Southern Miss Victorious in 1-0 Overtime Thriller Against Western Kentucky

The Golden Eagles defeated the Lady Toppers for the first time in program history
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (7-1) defeated the Lady Toppers of Western Kentucky (2-4-2) by a final score of 1-0 in overtime on Sunday afternoon. For Southern Miss, their victory on Sunday was the first against Western Kentucky in the history of the program.
The Golden Eagles and the Lady Toppers battled for a full 90:00 minutes and at the end of regulation play, the match remained scoreless. The two teams took a brief 5:00 minute break at the end of regulation play before beginning overtime.
Although Western Kentucky finished the match with an 11-10 shot advantage, it was the lone shot in overtime by Southern Miss that proved to be the dagger for the Lady Toppers in Sunday's contest.
At the 96:13 mark, Southern Miss sophomore midfielder Miah Zuazua found the back of the net after heading a ball past Western Kentucky goalkeeper Bailee Witt on an assist from senior midfielder Hannah Abrams to give the Golden Eagles their first C-USA win of the season.
Southern Miss goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich finished the match with four saves, earning her fourth clean sheet of the season. Mindnich's play in the net combined with a solid performance from the Southern Miss defense were both key factors in the Golden Eagles' victory.
Southern Miss, now 1-0 in conference play will return to the pitch on Thursday, September 20 when they host C-USA opponent North Texas (5-1-1) at 4:00 p.m. (CT) at the USM Track & Field and Soccer Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss. Â
Free lanyards will be given to the first 100 fans at Thursday's match. Thursday's match will also feature Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day.
